The Journey Begins: Process of sperm donation

Written by Amrita K Flora

Here at the British Sperm Bank, we provide a step-by-step guide on how to donate sperm to make the process as simple as possible. We believe that every act of donation is an invaluable gift that can profoundly impact lives, creating new possibilities for hopeful parents and the beautiful souls they long to bring into the world. As you explore the world of sperm donation with us, you'll discover the joy of selflessness, the thrill of empowerment, and the satisfaction of knowing you've played a crucial role in creating families.

The initial steps in becoming a sperm donor are making that first point of contact with us. We have a questionnaire form found on www.britshspermbank.com which you will need to fill out and allows us to gather any basic information. At the clinic, we carefully review this questionnaire and decide if you meet the criteria. If you have met the criteria then you will receive a telephone consultation to discuss the process. If you are then happy to proceed you will come to the clinic in Leicester where we will further discuss this with you. A sample will be taken for screening and you will be offered counselling. Finally, the process of donation begins and can take between 6-18 months with you coming into the clinic at regular intervals during this time.

Making the first donation

Preparing for your first donation can be a mix of excitement and nervousness. You should prepare for your first donation and the ones prior to this by looking after your sperm. You should avoid hot baths and saunas as well as stay hydrated and exercise regularly.

Additionally, you should make sure you’re well informed about the process of sperm donation as this will help you to approach the process with confidence and a sense of purpose. When going through screening, you should make sure that you are being as honest and transparent as possible about your medical history, lifestyle and genetic conditions. This is important for ensuring the well-being of any children who may be born. You should make sure to ask all the questions that you need to make sure you are comfortable during the process. After the first donation, if you ever feel overwhelmed or have concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to our clinics’ counsellor to assist you. Finally, make sure to celebrate your contribution and recognise the significance of your selfless act.
